Pharming
Pharming is a technique to fool the browser and the DNS server. When you type in a website address, your browser make a request to the DNS server for the IP address of the website requested. Your browser then use the IP address provided by the DNS server to contact the Web Server that host the website. If a DNS server that your browser is requesting the IP address from have been poison meaning that the DNS Server cache have been alter to store the wrong IP address. When your browser contact the DNS server to request the IP address for the website, the DNS Server provide your browser with the wrong IP address to a site that have been setup to look like the website you intended to visit.
Pharming is tough to defend because there isn't much you can do except to make sure that the website that you are visiting look legitimate. This is one of the reason why you do not want to click on link. It is better to type in the URL (Website address) because those link can lead you to a destination that you were not intended of going. Also if you click on a link that cause your browser to display a message that indicates a mismatched security certificate then that is a major red flag.
