Reducing SPAM Email
SPAM email can be a nuisance and a waste of time. Everyday Email server are hit with millions or billions of SPAM email. Most will be blocked, but some manage to bypass the SPAM filter. Most SPAM email are harmless, but there are SPAM email out there that contain attachment that when open, the computer can be infected by a virus. SPAM email are very costly to organization because IT department spend so much time trying to filter out SPAM from legit email. Sometime the SPAM can cause a domain to be blacklisted as known SPAM distributor. Spammer can take over computer and use the computer as SPAM relay thus hiding the exact source of where the SPAM is coming from. The ISP can shutoff services if they think that the computer you are using is part of a SPAM distribution. To avoid all these headache, avoid doing or do the following:
- Don't respond to SPAM email
- Don't post your email on the Web (Have 2 email account. One for personal and one for non-personal)
- Webmasters shouldn't use mailto
- Turn off image display in email programs (Click here for instruction)
- Tweak junk mail filtering on your mail server
- Turn on junk mail filtering (Click here for instruction)
- Install an Anti-Spam program
